Self Publish Your Book With AuthorHouse

Author House

I published my first book called “How to Make a Living as a Working Actor in L.A.” through authorhouse.com over two years ago and it has been creating residual income and royalties for me ever since. Author House is a self-publishing company and basically anyone can publish their work if they are willing to pay for it. At the time, it cost me $698 to get my book made and Author House even put my book on sale at amazon.com and at barnesandnoble.com. This price includes cover design and your own ISBN number for your book.

This is my book on Barnes and Noble: How To Make a Living as a Working Actor in L.A.

If you have a topic that you are knowledgeable about and can produce a well written 150+ page book, then you should consider self-publishing. The best part about self publishing is the fact that you don’t need a literary agent or a high powered publisher to get your book off the ground.

Each quarter Author House cuts me a check for royalties. These checks have been as high as $300 and as low as $75. These low figures are partially my fault – since I haven’t advertised my book elsewhere. I have just depended on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Google for book sales. If you are going to publish a book with Author House – you’ll definitely want to consider ways to market your book properly.  Marketing should greatly improve the amount of residual income you earn from your book. Author House even offers various publicity packages for an additional charge that can help get your book noticed.

Author House also offers other marketing choices to help you increase your book’s sales. You can get your book made into an e-book and sell it on Clickbank or other affiliate marketing websites. You may even want to consider building your own website specifically for the sale of your book – this website could link directly to your book’s page on Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.com. Even with out additional advertising, I made back my initial investment in the first six months and I believe that you can do the same, everything after the initial six months is pure profit. For those with a popular, well written story or topic – Author House can provide an excellent source of residual income.

I’m not surprised there are no comments.. I myself am STUNNED by my first royalty cheque..a measley £O.88pence! I paid £1.849.OO to have ‘Luke Baynard…private dick! ‘AT THE BEETHORPE’ published, The first? copy of my book was sold at £12. 49p probably by Amazon. Roland x

I am amazed that A.H. are not marketing this book more widely. It is very funny and has quite a pace, what with murder, sex, and the various comical characters who inhabit the Beethorpe Hotel.. Also those who just happen? to visit the Hotel. When the sniff of murder is in the air, trainspotters abound.. Clapham junction Station is deserted! With such notriety Jessica Fairchild, the proprietress, is thinking in terms of a new wing. Does she expect the murders to keep on coming? Luke Baynard hopes not..he’s only here for the beer!

I am currently writing to as many blog site that I can find. my experience with my autobiography published by Authorhouse was an extremely expensive mistake. It cost me thousands of £’s and at the time of writing I am still owed overdue royalty payments, the usual response from Authorhouse is silence,[as it is now]
I have been lied to, my personal mail was intercepted and opened, and I have cancelled my contract and have re-published my book which is and has received excellent reviews. The publishing by Authorhouse was negligable/abysmal and If I wanted a big player in the book world to handle my book on a ’sale/return’ basis, I had to pay AH, something like £500 per year. There were two such organisations who wanted to put my book on their shelves and they were expected to pay the RRP for each book !! Needless to say they declined and have not returned, YET Amazon was supplied copies of my book , without my knowledge, by AH who then received a large % of the books RRP whilst giving me £1.50ish. It is a scam which preys on the naivety of first time authors, and they know it. There is also a strong suspicion from many authors, that many sales are being concealed /obscured to fraudulently obtain money and of course divert taxes. I am personally awaiting stock sale numbers from the major book outlets as I write.
The only thing that myself and the many other scammed authors can do is spread the truth far and wide, tell our friends to do the same, so that the world knows.
The odd ‘employee’ who writes answers to the blog sites as instructed – fools nobody.

I hope this is not true – yet I have no way of knowing if I am actually getting paid for the amount of sales generated. My book was at one point ranked #300,000 in all books on barnesandnoble.com – yet my recent royalty checks have been pretty dissapointing. Today it is ranked 625,098.

Looks like people are having some bad luck with AH – maybe self publishing through Amazon is a better idea? Anyone out there self pub with Amazon? We’d love to hear your results!

Amazon are also an organisation which clouds its figures and information. Look as hard as you like for a phone number for someone at Amazon with responsibility, I have spent a great deal of time pursuing them for my sales statement, they ignore you , re-direct you and refuse to answer a phone which was busy seconds before. I suggest you use “Print on Demand” they can print in the UK,USA,Australia, at reasonable rates. Whatever you do , do not use Authorhouse.

I paid A.H. £1.849.00 for publishing my Book ‘AT THE BEETHORPE’ (Luke Baynard) This was earlier this year (2009) All I have had is 88 pence! That sounds like ONE book sold by Amazon.. And YET so many of these on line mention (second hand as if there were more sold..what’s it all about Alfie!?? Disgusted Kingston Vale.

Any other writers been duped by A.H. (or any other) I had the same thing with my first book (Publishers PEGASUS) I had very little from them either.. It seems they charge you good money to publish the book, and then take all the proceeds and claim thjey have not sold any! please email me about your experiences with any of these swindlers.. rolandrpeach@aol.com

You again TONY LIDDICOAT? Maybe your book sucks. Again, AuthorHouse is a self-publishing company. They offer the services so you can turn your manuscript into a book, not market it for you. If you want to market it then you should have done something. Even if you have it published yet no one else but your family, friends and neighbors know about it, what kind of sales do you think your book can generate? Puh-leez!!!

    Some common sense please!

  11. Tony Liddicoat 18 March 2010 at 10:27 pm #

To ‘Angel-of-Death’ wow a real scary name, why on earth dont you use your real name of Michael John Wolfe?. You may well be right, maybe my book isn’t very good as your private mail to me suggests but of course until you have read it then you won’t have a qualified opinion, as I can imagion that many of your opinions are just that, unqualified and stated without knowing any of the facts.
Your unqualified opinion differs from the 25+ reviews of the book by the leading diving publications and web sites around the world which have all read and strongly recommended the book as a ‘must read’ to their readership. So ‘Angel-of-Death’ you stand alone in doing Authorhouses bidding. I hope it is a well rewarded undertaking and that when you return to Earth and change back into Micheal John Wolfe that you spend some time researching your brain before attempting to write. Take a moment to check out the many other websites of authors opinions and you may find that you are even more wide of the mark when you read about other authors who have a similar if not identical view of authorhouse as I have and there are thousnds of them.
    Sincerely
    Tony Liddicoat.

Okay, this is getting a little out of hand. First of all, I did not “private mail” anyone regarding Authorhouse. Second of all, I partially agree with you Tony – my book now only makes about $25 a quarter and I am not exactly pleased with Authorhouse. But I do believe I could have marketed my book better – so I also agree with that other person. I am by no means disguising myself as the “Angel of Death” – give me a break! I am running like six businesses – you think I have time to create fake emails about Authorhouse? If the this type of stuff continues on this posting – I will delete all comments from the both of you and disallow any comments on the Authorhouse post. Tony – I wish you best of luck with your book sales.

    The REAL Michael-John Wolfe

  13. Angel-of-Death 19 March 2010 at 5:10 am #

Sorry Liddicoat. I’m not this Michael your talking about.

And you say that I’m alone in this stand is not entirely true. You fail to see my point which is out of the 40,000+ authors of Authorhouse, only you and some other 60 authors have complaints. If they really are scamming people, they would have been shut down long ago, right? And Sen. Lugar would’ve done something about it.

I apologize to the REAL Michael. I didn’t message Liddicoat. Why in the world would I do that? Obviously, he ASSUMED wrong AGAIN. And I agree with you that HE is getting out of hand coz he posted in other sites, badmouthing AuthorHouse. He’s just part of the 1% that has a problem with AuthorHouse. If he would only ask properly and find out about his royalties and how and when he will be receiving it.

Just saying it as it is. Low retail price=low royalties. High retail price=high royalties. Of course, that all would still depend if your book makes sales. As easy and simple to understand as that. That’s why I said COMMON SENSE.

  14. Tony Liddicoat 22 March 2010 at 7:01 am #

I wish to clarify two things. Firstly to the ‘real’ Michael-john Wolfe, Your name is being used by the character calling himself ‘angel-of-death’ and comments which ended up with you from me were only responding to the mail address which accompanied the low mentality response I received. As it is now apparent there was a genuine mistake and I offer my sincere apologies and thank you for your reply.
To the character who hides behind the nom-de-plume of the ‘angel-of-death let me ask you a very simple and relevent question, what the hell has my dissatisfaction with authorhouse got to do with you? It is none of your business and you know none of the facts. At least if you want to become a stooge or sycophant for the cause of authorhouse at least make sure that you have the facts right !.My dissatisfaction with authorhouse has marginally to do with royalties but there is much more, very much more which includes probable tax evasion, tampering with private mail, lying and misleading statements and an overall cavalier disregard and an attitude of contempt for the clients once the money has been received. A-O-D you just do not know anything and burst in to a dispute without being aware of the facts and the dispute being absolutely none of your business.
I have a right to declare my dissatisfaction to any site to any body I want, providing it is the truth, or authorhouse could take legal action if they so wished and believe me they will not.
Write in to any search engine ‘complaints authorhouse’ and watch the pages and pages of dissatisfied clients. Wasn’t it but a few years ago that they lost a big legal case for misinforming a client and giving false information ??. There is currently a complaints list being assembled as a petition against authorhouse and the organisers expect 1000 signatures. Thats a long way from the ‘only’ 60 authors claimed by A-O-D. So let me quote your ‘common sense’. My complaint does not involve marketing of my book or sales, so again you got it wrong. Common sense is also staying schtumm when you know none of the facts.I will continue to to show my disatisfaction to any interested individuals.
    Sincerely
    Tony Liddicoat

I will be glad to help you look into any of your questions about royalties. It is indeed the author’s responsibility to promote his or her book — even if it’s published by a traditional publisher.
Successful authors, who sell thousands of books, and we have many; have a few things in common:

    - the book is well written and edited
    - the book is marketed actively by the author
    - the topic is interesting or timely

These are all factors controlled by the author; and AuthorHouse give authors complete control of their works.
We are always here to help or give advice. Thanks for choosing to publish with AuthorHouse.

Wow! Haven’t checked this blog for a while. I missed antagonizing the “whiner”. Haha!

Anyways, the thing you were talking about..what’s that again? “authorhouse complaints”? Hello?!!! Try typing all the other self-publishing, vanity or subsidy companies that there are and you’ll see that there are complaints about them being scammers, frauds and the likes. The thing that I have been trying to point out to you (and to all the other people who don’t know better) that whichever company that is, there will always be someone who is out to destroy, tarnish and badmouth the name of a competitor. That’s how business goes.

Here we go again – this posting is becoming a cage match between you two! :) Play nice.
