How to Get Private Advertisers for Your Blog or Website

make money online - your ad hereOne of the ways that many bloggers make money online is by attracting private advertisers to their blog or website.  While most bloggers do have ads displayed on their blog ?? most of these ads only payout should a visitor actually click on an ad and purchase a product or service.  But there are advertisers who might be willing to pay you a repeating monthly fee for ad space on your blog or website.  This is a great way to create monthly income from your blog ?? but the question is; how do you actually attract private advertisers?

One way would be to look at other blogs or websites in you niche and see who is advertising on those sites.  If you can find out the contact info for these advertisers, you can send an email to them introducing yourself and providing a link to your blog or website.  But if you plan on doing this, you??d better have some great traffic figures that you can prove to a potential advertiser.  I am noticing that most blogs that have private advertisers in my niche, the ??make money online? niche ?? all have an Alexa ranking of 50,000 or higher for the United States market.  Recently, my United States Alexa ranking has been swaying between 50,000 and 70,000 ?? not quite where I need to be to attract private advertisers.  When sending emails to potential advertisers, you can include your own traffic figures by taking screenshots of your monthly visitors and providing a link to your blog’s information on Alexa.

The Residuals and Royalties blog has had over 12,000 unique visitors for the past two months ?? yet I have not received any offers for private advertising space on this blog.  This led me to pursue other options.  I have found three services that you can sign up with that will actually submit your blog or website to potential advertisers.  Below is a list of the three services that I have found?

LinkWorth:  I got accepted to LinkWorth last week, no offers as of yet.

BuySellAds: I did not have enough traffic to get approved for BuySellAds

AdBrite: I have applied to AdBrite, but not gotten an approval response yet.

Even though I have applied to all three of these services, I have yet to get an offer for private advertising.  I am thinking that my visitor count is still to low ?? I know that if I had over 100,000 unique visitors per month, it would be much easier to gain private advertising.

The other question that comes up is exactly how much to charge advertisers for ad space?  The common sidebar ad is a standard 125×125 square and I am willing to sell such a space for $50 a month with a 6 month agreement.  (I don??t want to get locked into a low rate and then have my blog traffic skyrocket and be stuck at a certain price point.)  With a 6 month agreement, I know that I can always adjust my rates according to my traffic level.  If one of my readers can tell me what a typical 125×125 ad space sells for elsewhere – I would be interested in those figures.

If you have used any of these three ad network services and had success, please comment below and let us know about it.  If you have some tips for bloggers that can help them obtain private advertisers we would love to hear about your ideas.  Also, if you have compliments or comments about this review, or you think these ad networks are a scam – please let us know your thoughts.

Best regards,

Michael-John Wolfe

I’m quite curious about what price a 125×125 can fetch as well, Michael (I know it depends on views, etc).

This is definitely something I’ll be looking into soon. Thanks for the write-up.

Hi Moon – hopefully one of my readers will give us an idea of a 125×125 space that they have sold. Let’s wait and see…

Unfortunately, I don’t have the kind of traffic to charge for this kind of advertising… but I have seen other sites charging about $150 per month for a 125×125 banner.

Selling four spots at that rate would equate to $600 a month! I’d take that! I too need to improve my traffic first.

$500 for something I do for fun, that would be fun. But yeah, focusing on traffic first is essential!

I have to tell you, this blog is amazing. I have been off and on trying to do some online marketing stuff, and since I found this site, have been back on the trail. Right now, I am in 99% research mode, 1% action mode. I just wanted to thank you for keeping the goal in site.
