Focus groups, also known as market research studies are conducted in almost every major city in America.  These groups are basically a session where advertisers and companies get feedback from the public on their products, commercials and ideas.  The best part about these focus groups is the fact that the market research company that recruits you, will pay you handsomely for your time and opinion.

In most cases, you can make anywhere from $35 to $250 for particpating in a study.  The avergage focus group lasts about two hours and pays between $75 and $100.  These companies usually pay you in cash upon completing the focus group.  This is a great way to make some extra income or supplemental income.   I would not label focus groups as a source of residual income.

If you want to get involved in focus group in your area, the first thing you have to do is locate the local market research companies and get into their database.  You can do a Google search to find these companies, i.e. “Market Research Companies in Phoeniz, AZ” or you can visit this website that I found called Find Focus Groups.  This is a great resource for finding market research studies to participate in.

Once you find these companies, you can either give them your information over the phone or join their database on their website.  When you are joining their database, you should never say you have worked for a market research company in the past, you have been in radio, television or advertising – this will eliminate you from any possible focus groups.  Also, there will be a series of questions that you are asked about your daily behavior, in other words they might ask “do you drink wine?” or “do you frequent fast food restuarants?”.  The more things that you say “yes” to – the more groups you are likely to be invited to.  If McDonalds is conducting a study on their new hamburger, do you think they want people who frequent fast food restuarants or people who don’t?  You guessed it – they want the people who actually visit their restuarant.

The other thing is, most focus group companies will ask you “have you participated in a focus group within the last six months?” and if you answer “yes” – you will again be eliminated.  I never tell them that I did a recent group, this may seem dishonest – but when I get in the group I always provide quality feedback regarding the product and this is all the company really wants.  My goal is to get into as many groups as possible to make the most money.  In Los Angeles, I have a friend who actually had a $1,000 month from focus group earnings alone.  Believe me, if he told them he had participated in prior groups – he would have had a $0 month. 

The other place you can find some focus groups is on Craigslist.org, be careful though because there are a lot of scams that will ask for your social security number or drivers license – NEVER give this information out, it is not required to participate in any focus group.  Sign up with every company in your city, it may take a month or even six months before you are called for a group.  Just be patient and eventually you will have the opportunity to make some extra income by participating in focus groups.
