Not only can you reap a decent share of the financial returns, should an artist’s career take off – you can also get exclusive artist access, a copy of the completed album and even your name on the album sleeve.  There’s also a music trading exchange where investors can trade in and out of various artists.  (This exchange is for non-US residents only)  

As of now there is only a handful of artists to consider, but if this idea takes off – Slice the Pie could become a global marketplace where many musicians get their start.  If you check out the “fully financed artists” section you will see that 27 acts have already been fully funded.  Some of these acts have garnered a large sum of money to launch their career.  It will be interesting to see what percentage of Slice the Pie artists actually succeed and make a profit for their investors.  If you don’t want to invest in an artist, you can get paid to review artists as well.  The input received from music fans is obviously a valuable entity and Slice the Pie rewards you for this input!

For those of you that produce music, write lyrics or compose songs – Song Writer 101 is the one website online that can connect you will all of the information that you need regarding songs and song writing. Artists, lyricists and composers are all paid through song royalties and residual income.  If you have the talent and creativity, you too might be able to get your music into the right hands.

The Song Writer 101 website provides visitors with articles, news, media and books that you can purchase about the music industry. But the most important section of the Song Writer 101 website is the forum. In this forum you will find endless opportunities to collaborate discuss and post your lyrics and get valuable feedback from Song Writer 101 members.

If you do post your lyrics for feedback – be sure they are registered with a free service like BMI or other song copyrighting agency. This forum is a place where lyricists find composers and composers make connections with producers – it is an great networking tool for the music industry.

I wrote some country songs a while back and I got some amazing feedback, I was even able to find some musicians in Nashville who were interested in composing my songs. (Don’t laugh at me liking country music – I did live in the South for 9 years!)

If you write lyrics and someone else composes them – typically a 50/50 split is posted on the website where your register your song. (such as BMI) In other words, if a song begins to earn royalties the lyricist and the composer would split the royalties.

Everyone that I talked to on SongWriter101 has told me that it is much easier to get a song sold that is complete with lyrics and music. Selling lyrics by themselves is a tough thing to try and do, unless they were very strong lyrics.

I believe the current rate for royalty payments is 9.1 cents for each purchase or download of the song – I am not sure if royalties are paid for radio play. Does anyone reading this post know the answer to this? All in all, selling your songs and music is an excellent way to earn residual income if you have the talent.

If you are in a band, or if you produce music or can create music at home you should look into selling your work royalty free on eStockMusic. I am about as musically inclined as William Hung – so I cannot tell you from personal experience exactly how much you can make selling your music online. But I have a friend who owns a music studio and he told me that has been making pretty good residual income by selling his music online.

The main reason this royalty free music sells so well is due to the increased number of online films, short videos and You Tube projects that are being made. If you are producing a short film for the internet – you cannot use copyrighted music on your project if you want to submit your short to festivals or online contests.

Without permission from the band or composer, using copyrighted material is illegal. This is where eStockMusic comes in – they sell hundreds of songs online to producers and individuals who want to obtain royalty free music for their projects. In other words, these people are buying the rights to your music.

But don’t worry – even if one person buys your song on eStockMusic , that song remains for sale to other customers who may want the music. Basically your songs can sell over and over again to whoever would like to buy the royalty free download.

Instrumental music is probably the best seller, when you think of all of the films that have dramatic orchestra music during an intense scene in the movie; you can see why producers will purchase this type of music.

Rock, hip hop, rap, classical music and country can all be sold as royalty free music. Let’s say you are in a rock band and you haven’t gotten your big break yet, well why not produce some songs to sell online. This can be a great way to create residual income and earn royalties to help support your band and give you more experience producing quality music.

Just like selling your photograph’s online, the larger portfolio of music you have for sale on the website, the more likely you are to see increased sales and downloads of your songs.

Even if you aren’t in a band, I believe you can create music with programs such as Garage Band and other related software.
