The free versions went live last night at about 9 PM Mountain Time and in only nine hours we’ve had about 140 downloads. So we are hoping that free is the way to go. We earned .79 cents in the short time it has been live – this is where the comparison between paid apps and free apps will really be discovered. It will be interesting to see if we really can earn more income with a free app versus a paid app.It doesn’t make sense why they paid versions were ranked so highly in the Entertainment section (they’re still listed there!) and had such meager sales. This makes me wonder how others with successful apps are really earning so much money each day? Maybe there is some major factor that I am missing?

If you are one of my readers – please take a moment to download iBlood Test FREE or iBlood Test Kids FREE and give us a 5 star rating and review. This would really help our cause!

As if there weren’t enough new iphone apps available on the apps store, there is a new way to turn your blog into a full fledged iPhone app. A new service called iSites will convert your blog’s RSS feed into an iPhone app. Simply register with iSites and submit your RSS feed and add details such as your blog’s description, logo, and keywords and within a few clicks you can submit your blog to the reviewers at the app store.

I am guessing that Apple will be pretty particular about which blogs feeds they accept, but for successful blogs, getting accepted should not be a problem. Imagine how many more readers you can reach by providing them with a free downloadable app that will allow them to access your new content right from their phone at any given time.

iSites will do a blog conversion to an iPhone app for only $25 a month. I am having a hard time deciphering their pricing, their pricing page shows a yearly price of $299 a year – so I am guessing that you can either pay in full for the year or pay a month subscription fee. I am considering submitting the Residuals and Royalties blog to this service, especially if I can generate some ad revenue on my blog through a service like AdMobs. There is a $99 fee from iSites if you want to integrate AdMobs on your blog’s iphone app.

Once your blog is a live app, users can have full use of all of your blog’s functionality including the ability to comment, tweet and buzz up your blog posts. If this catches on, I am sure we will see many of the upper echelon blogs appearing as apps on the app store. I just wonder how apple will view this influx of new apps. I’d like to thank Residuals and Royalties reader Rick McBride for bringing this service to my attention. It seems I am getting more and more emails from readers who let me in on new and exciting websites and money making opportunities.

If you have used iSites or another service to turn your blog into an iPhone app, please let us know about it. If so, has your app had many downloads? Have you earned any residual income from AdMobs ads on your blog’s app? We would love to hear about it!

You can visit iSites here: iSites

Let us know what you think about this review of iSites, if you have compliments, complaints, comments or you think it is a scam – let us know by commenting below…

My second iPhone app went live on the app store today – actually I should say our

My second iPhone app went live on the app store today – actually I should say our</em app went live because this app was completed through a partnership with my app developer Russ. Russ worked very hard on this app and we are both very pleased with the results. It's been a long process, but we were both very excited to see this project go live today.

iBlood Test is a humorous app that lets you test others for a variety of STDs by drawing blood and running lab tests. Users simply place the iBlood Test needle up to their patient's arm and draw back the syringe. Within seconds a centrifuge starts processing the information and a blood test results page will list any diseases that the patient tested positive for. iBlood Test screens for various diseases like Herpes, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and more. At the end of the test, a Petri dish shows the diseases and bacteria laughing back at you!

Russ also made a kid's version of iBlood Test that eliminates the adult subject matter. With iBlood Test Kids, they get tested for everything from Alien Plague to Zombieosis! All in all we will have four versions of iBlood Test available on the app store: iBlood Test, iBlood Test FREE, iBlood Test Kids, iBlood Test Kids FREE. Right now we are holding off on the free versions.

When doing my research for this app, I did not find anything even remotely similar to iBlood Test available on the app store. I have no way of predicting how well this app will do, but I have seen many other humorous apps break into the top 50 in their category. One example is an app called Stool Scanner which you can check out here: Stool Scanner. Now, if this app made the top 25 (which it did at one point), you can’t tell me that iBlood Test cannot have similar results!

You can see funny YouTube promo video of iBlood Test in below…

One of the crucial points in a new app’s life is the initial feedback it gets from the first few people who download it. A few one star ratings can send a new app plummeting and conversely, a few five star ratings can quickly build buzz for a new app. This is where you come in. I rarely ask anything of my readers – but today I am asking you for a favor. If you have an iPhone, please take the time to download iBlood Test or iBlood Test Kids and if you feel we deserve it, give us a positive review and a 5 star rating. This would really help get iBlood Test off to the right start!

Russ and I purchased a small block of AdMob’s advertisements that will be displayed on other apps. Hopefully these ads will attract people enough to visit iBlood Test in the app store and take the time to download it. I am also doing additional marketing for the app, which includes building a website and emailing all of the app review websites in hopes of a positive review.

This is a crossroads for me when it comes to pursuing and developing iPhone apps. Should iBlood Test fail, chances are that I won’t be creating other apps. But if we succeed and create some nice residual income, I have no problem investing those earnings into additional iPhone apps. It’s not that I would be “giving up” should iBlood Test fail; it is just that I know that of the 40 or 50 ideas that I came up with, iBlood Test was by far the best and most unique. If this one doesn’t make it, those others certainly don’t stand a chance.

You can view the first two paid versions of iBlood Test in the app store at the links below:

iBlood Test

iBlood Test Kids

Let us know what you think about iBlood Test and feel free to give your feedback in the comment section below. At the end of the month you will be able to see my earnings report for June which will include exactly how well iBlood Test did. You will see both the paid app earnings as well as the payment from AdMobs. To close, I’d like to thank Russ for all of his hard work and his ability to put up with someone like me, who’s not very “tech savvy”! THANKS RUSS!

Best regards,

Whenever I get into a conversation about creating and developing iPhone apps with someone, undoubtedly the discussion somehow turns to the famous iFart app. For those of you that are not familiar with iFart, it is one of the top twenty downloaded apps of all time and the earnings run that it had in December of 2008 is nothing short of amazing. In fact, on Christmas Day 2008 iFart had nearly 34,000 downloads in just one day! Although this story may be old news to some, I feel it is still worth rehashing for those readers who may not be aware of this incredible story.

The creator of iFart, Joel Comm had brazenly posted his earnings on his blog for all of the world to see and it’s no wonder that there are over 500 results that appear when you search the word “fart” on the iPhone app store. Joel may have shot himself in the foot by releasing his sales figures so early, because a whole hoard of competition appeared with similar fart style apps over the next two years. Still, those competitors haven’t kept iFart from it’s enormous success and even today, two years later, iFart is still steadily downloaded on iPhones all over the world.

Here are the sales figures for iFart during that famous December of 2008:

12/12 – 75 units – #70 entertainment
12/13 – 296 units – #16 entertainment
12/14 – 841 units – #76 overall, #8 entertainment
12/15 – 1510 units – #39 overall, #5 entertainment
12/16 – 1797 units – #22 overall, #3 entertainment
12/17 – 2836 units – #15 overall, #3 entertainment
12/18 – 3086 units – #10 overall, #3 entertainment
12/19 – 3117 units – #9 overall, #2 entertainment
12/20 – 5497 units, – #4 overall, #2 entertainment
12/21 – 9760 units – #2 overall, #1 entertainment
12/22 – 13274 units – #1 overall
12/23 -13,349 units – #1 overall
12/24 – 19,520 units – #1 overall
12/25 – 38,927 units – #1 overall

On Christmas day Joel Comm earned $27,249 in net residual income from iFart’s nearly 34,000 downloads. What a day this must have been! Is this type of success possible in today’s iPhone market? I doubt it. In fact, with major players like video game manufacturers and movie studios getting into the mix, the ability for a novelty app to have this kind of success may not be possible in today’s market. Last I heard, there were over 180,000 apps available in the app store. How many apps were available in the app store back in December of 2008? My guess is MUCH less than today, which means that iFart had limited competition and a much greater chance of getting downloaded. Besides this fact, free apps were not as prominent back then and the idea of a free version of iFart was not even a consideration. At a price of only .99 cents – downloading iFart required no second thought from the millions of iPhone users across the globe.

The fact is, Joel Comm was a fortunate pioneer in novelty app creation at a time when the window for success was wide open. That window is rapidly closing, but the question is: how do we find the next window of opportunity and take advantage of it in its youth? Could that new opportunity already exist? Could it be iPad apps? Could it be the Android market? Could it be a completely different market? If anyone knows the answer, please tell us about it! How much money has the iFart app earned since it’s release? We may never know the answer – but my guess is that the total is well over one million dollars.

Best regards,

While many of us who are pursing new app ideas find our coders and developers via elance, there is a new service that is solely dedicated to connecting those people with app ideas to competent coders and developers. There seems to be a large increase in the amount of people who are creating new apps and NewAppIdea.com could be a great place to get that app idea you have been considering actually turned into a reality.

All you have to do is register with NewAppIdea.com and submit your idea on the website. Expert app developers will then be able to view your job details and submit a quote for development costs. You can then review the various quotes and make contact with these developers to discuss the particulars of your app design.

Just like elance, NewAppIdea.com uses an escrow payment so that both parties are protected while the app development takes place. This way, you don??t have to release the funds until you receive the finished app the way you want it. When posting your app idea, it is good practice to just provide a high level overview of the app idea and ask the potential app developer to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before giving them the specific details. You should be aware that their quotes may adjust a bit after you disclose all of the app details to the app developer. You can actually download a sample NDA right on the NewAppIdea.com website.

It looks like NewAppIdea.com is a great place for coders and developers to find work as well. You can post your portfolio of prior apps that you have created, this will give potential clients an idea of your work and what you are able to accomplish. I am sure that with each new app you create ?? you skills improve and your ability to take on new tasks increases.

You can view NewAppIdea’s website here: NewAppIdea

Let us know what you think about this review of NewAppIdea.com, if you have compliments, complaints, comments or you think it is a scam – let us know by commenting below…

My first iPhone app ?? iTimeout, has been on the market for over a month now and to be honest, it is not exactly earning a lot of money. In fact, I am lucky to be making $1 to $2 a day with this app and I can already see the daily downloads starting to decline. I treat this app as more of a learning experience; it??s not the kind of app that was going to skyrocket to the top of the bestseller??s list and it not really attractive to kids. I have no regrets about spending the $125 to create iTimeOut and since its inception; I have built a friendship with Russ ?? the coder who built iTimeOut.

We talked a few times on Skype to discuss the details of iTimeOut and I began to bounce some other app ideas off Russ. While many of my ideas were good, they either weren??t quite good enough or they were already taken. iTimeOut hit the market and Russ and I kept touching base via Skype. Russ had begun getting a lot of requests for other work through elance and I kept brainstorming app ideas with him. Then one night ?? something crazy happened. I bounced an app idea off Russ and asked him how much he would charge for this type of app. Russ made me an offer I couldn??t refuse.

Russ liked my new app idea so much that he asked to go in to this app as my partner. We decided to split all of the costs involved in making and marketing the app. Russ would take care of all of the coding, artwork and creating the app and I would have to do all of the marketing for the app. I think I thought about Russ?? proposal for about 3 seconds before I agreed to team up with him in this new venture. This seemed like a win-win situation for both of us and if the app succeeds, hopefully Russ will earn far more than the full amount that I would have paid him to create the app. Russ is building a paid and free version of this app as well as a kid??s version and a free kid??s version. We have agreed to split all of the profits 50/50.

This may seem like a risky proposition for some, especially since Russ and I live thousands of miles apart and we have never met. (I keep joking with him that I am going to steal our profits and head to Mexico with the money!) But, I think I am pretty good at gauging people and their true intentions. Russ has been nothing but reliable and responsive throughout the entire process of making apps together. We do plan on making up a written agreement that states the details of our partnership and we agreed to host the app on my iTunes account and run the ads from Russ?? AdMobs account, this way neither one of us would hold all the marbles.

This goes to show the value of a good idea. I got an app made for much less than full price, that probably would have cost me $500 to $800 to have made and Russ got what will hopefully be a winning idea and someone to market the app. I will also say that even though the initial idea was mine, Russ has put just as many of his own ideas into this app ?? including some great things that I would not even have thought of.

I won??t be telling my readers about our app idea until it is live on the app store. I will tell you that there is nothing else like it available and it will be attractive to both kids and adults. I will also be spending some money on AdMobs ads to attract more downloads when the app is first released. Our app should go live sometime in early June and I am eager to see the results! Plus I can??t wait to drain our account and head to Cancun?just kidding Russ!

Best regards,

Since I created my first iPhone app, I find myself consistently trying to come up with new app ideas that might be unique to the iPhone app store. Over the past two weeks I have had some great ideas and some not so great ?? but the one thing I am finding out is that no matter how unique your idea is; in many cases it has already been done. My question to you is ?? if you have an app idea that you feel strongly about but it already exists on the app store, should you pursue making your own version to compete with the current app?

My initial instinct tells me that if there were more than 3 or 4 similar apps, I would not pursue trying to compete with an already diluted market. If there were only 1 or 2 similar ideas and I felt that I could make a better version then what is currently available ?? I would definitely try and compete. Also, if there is no current free version of your idea, you could be the first to make a free version and chances are that it will get many more downloads than the paid versions of your competitors. Below is a list of ideas that I have had over the past two weeks and then a sample of the same idea that has already been taken. Would you pursue any of these?

iLie: A Gag Lie Detector App | Competition: 26 similar apps

iTaser: A Gag Taser Gun | Competition: 15 similar apps

iFakeID: Create Gag Fake ID??s for Various States | Competition: 3 similar apps

iCoffeeWarmer: A Gag Stove Coil that Warms Your Coffee | Competition: 1 similar app

iTrafficLight: An App That Lets You Change the Traffic Lights | Competition: 2 similar apps

iSight: An Eye Test App that Show the Letters of an Eye Exam | Competition: 3 similar apps

These are just a few ideas I have had. To be honest, there are 3 or 4 other ideas that I am hesitant to mention, because I might actually pursue one of them. The traffic light idea is already made by Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income, which is funny because we both are in the same blogging world and the day after I had the idea I went to Pat??s blog only to see that he had already made it! What are the odds of that?

As of now I have one app that is being created that has NO competition. It is a completely unique idea and that fact alone gave me the confidence to have it made by my app developer. But it took a lot of brainstorming to come up with that one idea that has no competition. Once this unique app is live on the app store, I will announce it on the Residuals and Royalties blog. I plan on marketing it using AdMobs in hopes of making it a best seller.

If you have made an app even though similar versions already existed on the app store – please comment below and let us know about your results, sales, etc. Or if you have had app ideas that you later found out were already taken – let’s hear about them!

Best regards,

The Field Agent app will pay you to complete simple tasks from home or in your town or city. Most of these small jobs pay between $2 and $8 each and they usually only take a few minutes to complete. These small tasks are requested by various companies that need to gather information all across the nation and they simply don??t have the manpower to get all of these jobs done. This is where you come in!

Just accept a task and complete it with the Field Agent app and your Field Agent account will be credited with your payment. For example, you may get a job that consists of going to your local grocery store to see if Folgers Coffee is marked on sale. You may have to take an image of the coffee can’s sale sticker with your iPhone and upload it to the Field Agent app. Next you might have to answer any pertinent questions about the sale item. Once you are finished you can submit the task as completed and your Field Agent account will be credited with your payment.

As soon as you complete a job, your earnings are shown in your Field Agent Account as a memo posting. If the information you submitted for your job is accurate, the memo posting will clear and reflect actual funds within 48 hours. At that point, you can keep your funds safely in your Field Agent Account, or they can be transferred to a PayPal account. You don??t have to pay any of the PayPal transaction fees, Field Agent will pay these for you.

Your ability to complete jobs effectively will be shown in your rep score which can range from 0 to 100. All Field Agents start with a rep score of 85 and as tasks are completed quickly and accurately, your rep score can go up. You can lose points by failing to provide accurate information or not completing assigned tasks. Many Field Agent jobs are surveys that can be done from any location. Other jobs will ask you specific questions about your home or items in your pantry. Having reliable transportation certainly gives you access to more jobs, but you can still make money with Field Agent if you cannot drive.

If you are a Field Agent and you have had some success making money with this app – please let us know about it. I would love to get an idea of how much money a Field Agent can actually make in one month. Hopefully this app will branch out to other platforms like Blackberry and Google Android.

Now that my first app is live and available on both the iPhone app market and the Android market, it is time to find out the best way to monetize my apps. My iTimeOut app is pretty basic and I don??t expect it to skyrocket up to the top of the bestselling apps list. This was an entry level app that I created to simply learn how the process works and see if creating other apps is something that I want to pursue. Like I said before, I??d be happy to simply make my money back and create $50 a month in residual income from iTimeOut ?? anything more is gravy. In any case, creating an app and getting it live for only $125 is a real bargain.

If iTimeOut gets just two downloads a day on the iPhone app market, I would make $42 a month. This would be at a price of .99 cents and my cut would be .70 cents. (.70 cents x 2 downloads a day = $1.40/day x 30 days = $42.00) Right now iTimeOut is on both the Apple and Android markets at a listed price of .99 cents. Both apps went live on April 13th, 2010 and I plan on leaving them both for sale for a period of one month. After one month I will calculate and post my sales figures below.

In the meantime, my app developer is creating two free versions of the iTimeOut app for both Apple and Android. I hope to have the free versions up on both markets by mid-May 2010. These free versions will feature advertisements from the ad network AdMob and I will get paid whenever someone views these ads. I think this is the case?do any of my readers know whether AdMobs requires and actual ??click? on an ad to get paid or if you simply get paid when the user views the ads when they open the ap? I think the latter is the case. Also, I am unsure how much AdMobs typically pays per view or per click ?? if someone has an idea of this figure, please comment below!

Once the free versions have been live for one month, I will also come back to this post and enter my earnings figures from AdMob below. I don??t plan on doing any special advertising of this app during this test period so I won??t skew the results. I think this will be a very interesting experiment and to be honest, I think I already know what the results will be. Below is my sales chart for both the paid and free versions of iTimeOut?

iTimeOut Sales ?? 1 Month Period (April 13 to May 12)

iTimeOut for iPhone @ .99 cents: $_______ ___ Downloads

iTimeOut for Android @ .99 cents: $________ ____Downloads

iTimeOut Advertising Earnings ?? 1 Month Period (May 13 to June 12)

iTimeOut for Iphone FREE: $________ _____Downloads

iTimeOut for Android FREE: $________ _____Downloads

So let the experiment begin!
