While on set I got to spend the day with one of the stars of these commercials and his story was very interesting.  His name is Freddie Braggs, also known as “Freddie Bags” by other Southwest crew members.  The residual income from these commercials has changed Freddie’s life and his story is quite amazing. 

Freddie Braggs worked on the ramp at the Southwest Airlines terminal in Houston, Texas for 13 years.  While he loved his job, he still had the same troubles that most of us have making ends meet.  This past March, while working on the ramp Freddie got notified that Southwest was holding auditions for their next round of commercials.  Freddie asked if he could attend and although he was a little nervous, he nailed his first audition. 

This audition led to booking his first SAG national commercial for Southwest.  Freddie had no idea what he was in for next.  A few weeks after his commercial, he went to his mailbox to find over $6,000 in residual checks the Southwest commercial.  This was the day that changed Freddie’s life.  Freddie now gets noticed by people wherever he goes and on his flight to Denver the flight attendant even announced “Ladies and gentlemen, we have a star on board!” and she made Freddie stand up, while everyone clapped.

Since that first commercial Freddie Braggs has shot about 6 total commercials and earned well over $20,000 in residuals in just three months.  Freddie told me that there are things that do change when you have this kind of money rolling in.  “When I used to go to the market, I would debate whether or not I should buy hamburgers – now I just buy the T-Bone steak and don’t even think about it” said Freddie, while they were wiring him for sound.  

What is most amazing about Freddie is the fact that he has remained loyal to his “regular” job as a baggage handler.  That’s right; Freddie still works on the ramp in Houston taking care of Southwest bags!  In fact, he was heading back to Houston and back to work after the commercial shoot.  

Overall, I had a great day on set with Freddie and the other crew guys from Southwest.  There were three other Southwest crew members that were all filming their first Southwest commercial.  I could tell a few of them were a little nervous about shooting their first commercial, but they did a great job.  We also got to shoot at Red Rocks Park just west of Denver – which you can see by the photos below is an amazing place!

I will tell you that this is a pretty large space and from what I can see there are about 80 RV’s parked inside the location.  The ground is simple dirt, so the owner did not even pay to have it paved.  I decided to call the location and ask how much he charged for an RV space.  When I talked to the owner he told me it would be between $80 and $110 a month, depending on the size of my RV.  So if we take an average monthly figure of about $95 and multiply this times 80 RV’s – this guy has a gross profit of $7,600 per month.  I am not sure what he is paying for the land, but I am guessing that he is making a pretty healthy profit every month.The best part about RV storage is the fact that you have zero employees; you don’t need to be on site unless you are showing an open parking spot to a potential customer.  RV owners can let themselves in and out of the facility by entering a code into the electric gate at the front of the storage entrance.  So other than the land, the fence and the gate – the only thing else you’d need to purchase is liability insurance.  This leads me to believe that RV storage is possibly the perfect business.   

As an RV storage business owner, you would simply run all of your customer’s credit cards on a monthly basis, so there would be no billing and no check collecting.  Overall, this seems like an amazing source of residual income.  Usually, I try to focus on ways to make money online here at the Residuals and Royalties blog – but occasionally I like to investigate other ways to create supplemental income or start a small businesses.  The RV storage business seemed like a great business model for those who have access to available land. If you or anyone you know has owned an RV storage business, let us know if there are any downsides that I might be missing.  Feel free to comment below!

We will put a time limit of 3 years on this experiment, so no – you cannot just buy and hold bonds or CD’s fo 30 years.  I’m talking about a plan of action?  Would you make 50 iphone apps?  Would you start a business?  Would you hire freelancers to create tons of websites?  I’d love to hear your unique ideas!

Feel free to put your entire plan in a comment below and we can decide who has the best chance of reaching the $1 million mark in the shortest time.
